The biggest and most diverse orchid genus is the dendrobium orchid. It has over 1,200 species and they are native to Southeast Asia, specifically to the tropics. 500 species can be found in Papua New Guinea alone, so one is never in short supply of Dendrobiums to grow in Asia Pacific. The name of the plant gives an indication of where it likes to live: “dendron” means “tree” and “bios” means “life”; it is one who literally lives on trees, or, essentially, an epiphyte. It can be found in tropical lowlands or all the way to places 10,000 feet in altitude. Whether it’s humid and swampy or almost desert-like, the Dendrobium can thrive and still be gorgeous. Each species of course has its own liking when it comes to temperature and continuity of watering (depending on if the species is evergreen or deciduous), but they all like to grow in tiny pots which can barely accommodate their shallow root systems.
