What is 5S?

I first came across the term 5S when I was reading about how to make my small company more efficient. I found out many good things about this procedure which originated in Japan. The history of 5S was studied by MIT in the late 1980s as they were working to help the automotive industry stay competitive with Japan. In studying Japanese firms, they learned about this system. The letter “S” represents the first letter of five Japanese words. In English the words are sorting, straightening, systematic cleaning, standardizing and self-discipline. Each step has a part in making a safe and productive work environment. The system is not just a do one time method. When put in place with purpose, the 5S system becomes a new way to do things. In the United States, three more “Ss” are added. They are safety, security and satisfaction. A number of companies now adhere to this methodology and specialized firms exist to help put this system in place.
