In fact, the resistance to 3DTV, such as it is, arises in large part from these annoyances about 3D glasses. Were it not for these barriers, 3DTV would likely be on its way to dominating the market right now.

So why are active shutter glasses not universal? The answer is that, in part, different manufacturers of 3D sets use somewhat different technologies for communication between the glasses and the set. In other words, there is no standardization. You might say that one company’s glasses simply cannot understand another company’s set.

Is there a solution in the works?

Yes, there is. Some manufacturers of 3D sets are working to develop a standard for active shutter technology to be used in each of their sets. Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and a company that makes 3D glasses called XPAND are developing what they call the “Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative.” This could lead to 3D glasses becoming effectively universal, thereby allowing you to enjoy a film at your friend’s house on his or her Panasonic 3D HDTV using the glasses you bought for your Sony, and vice versa. Currently, plans are to put glasses that adhere to this new standard on the market some time in 2012.

Some of the motive for this initiative is surely the fact that people often enjoy getting together to watch movies, TV, or sports. And since 3D glasses do not work between different manufacturers’ sets, people cannot simply bring their own. Given that the cost of 3D glasses ranges from about $40 to about $100, keeping enough on hand for your Monday Night Football get-together is an expensive proposition. However, if everyone could use their own glasses, that spreads the financial burden out.

Now, there is some dispute as to whether or not we will see broad adoption of 3D television. A recent Nielsen poll suggested that nearly 60% of people claimed they did not plan to buy a 3DTV. No doubt this is in large part due to the facts that glasses are expensive and do not enjoy cross-brand compatibility, and that there are still relatively few 3D titles out. But it is worth remembering that similar concerns surrounded HDTV when it first came out, and now it is nearing universality.

Moreover, recent market analysis shows that purchases of 3DTVs increased by more than 100% during the 1^st quarter of 2011. As with all new technologies, while there are always excited early-adopters, most people will be slow to adopt 3D television.
